Notions are a catch-all phrase for all that other stuff in our sewing room. Elastic, buttons, ribbons, snaps, zippers, interfacing and more.
It’s so easy to accumulate a ton of this stuff over time. We purchase them for workshops, seasonal crafts, costumes and specialty items. And you just can’t purchase one, so you always have leftovers.
They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, so not only is there clutter with the notions, we put them in containers. And then put those containers in containers. And sometimes even those go in containers. And the containers can close you in. So many times I go looking for a notion that I know I have but can’t find it because it’s buried under all these other notions I never use. I know so many of you are just entombed in Rubbermaid containers filling your space.
So this really is clutter central. You'll need to be brutal because, with very few exceptions, none of this is precious. If you haven’t used it in a year, if you ever need it again, buying it is just as easy as collecting it.
Start by identifying how much space do you want these items taking up? Are they all going to fit in one container, a drawer or a shelf? Then only put back the items that you need right now. More is not necessarily better.
If you are dealing with containers that have not been opened in 5 years, don’t even try to sort them. Open the lid, confirm that there are no important documents or folders inside and let it go. You have lived without the contents for 5 years. The odds are in your favour that you will survive without them.
Last year this was a big challenge for me and I decluttered drawers and containers full of notions that had amassed over 30 years. Unfortunately, this does not give me a pass for this year. I know I need to revisit it all with fresh eyes and separate out all that does not serve me anymore. There was also some impulsive purchasing over the past 2 years. And items that go with projects that I have forgotten about and need to get back on the roster.
So timer in hand, and a cup of tea, I am off to my sewing room.
I have a new season of KQC and the first guest is Veruscka Zarate. Be sure to listen while you work. She is an amazing woman. Let her inspire you.
See you tomorrow for Day 14!
