Raise your hand if you have more than one type of pin in your sewing space. And how many needles?

Different pins are for different jobs. I have three different types that I use. Plus a bag of clips.

But I found that I have 6 different types of pins in my sewing space. Two of them I have not touched for over 10 years and now are so dull that they are unusable. So they are going. And the other was a less than perfect emergency purchase on route to a quilting retreat. These I am offering up in my donation bin.

You may also have dull pins. Bent pins. Rusty pins. Time to let them go.

Please dispose of them safely. I keep an old pill container beside my sewing machine. Whenever I need to dispose of a sharp it immediately goes in there. And when it’s full, I give it to our metal recycler.

And how about the container for these pins. I found a stash of safety pins in my drawer. The container was old chipped and four times the size that it needed to be. Another bit of space found.

Now the needles. We have the hand sewing needles and the machine needles.

If you cannot identify the size and type, it might be time to let them go. Several years ago I culled out all the needles older than my children. Most of them I had no clue the size so it was time.

Somehow, I now have a crazy assortment of other needles too. I think they came in with the old threads. Twin, doll-making etc. Honestly, I have always wanted to try sewing with a twin needle, so I am putting it on my list of things to try for 2021. Doll-making? Not likely - so I’m putting these in the donation pile.

As with the pins, please dispose of them safely.

I also found I had several pincushions that I had fallen out of love with several years ago. I held on to them long after I stopped using them because they were gifts. But it’s time to let them go.

Remember to set your timer. Don’t burn out.
